Median Barrier

The construction of median barrier has become a very important activity for Cassidy Slipform Kerbing. Providing a number of benefits over other cross over restraints, Concrete median barrier is maintenance free when contrasted with the previously more common steel alternatives. A fifty year maintenance free life is attainable by using this increasingly popular installation. Design characteristics of concrete median barrier are totally motivated by driver safety and the aversion of cross over to the oncoming lanes. Incorporating a wide base, which graduates before reaching the wall’s shoulders, the step design is specifically designed to take the impact of wheel and suspension systems before the well protected passenger cage strikes the barrier face. In the event of a collision, a car will be guided along the smooth face of the barrier in the direction of traffic flow, greatly reducing the danger of being hit by vehicles following at high speed.

Specification of the NRA in-situ concrete median barrier centers on a 900 mm high structure while a further 90 mm of its base is beneath the finished road surface. Width at the base is 570 mm which is central to its ability to withstand impacts coupled with the design of the stepped base section and shoulder design.

Further aids to structural stability are the incorporation of two strands of reinforcement steel located at 150 mm and 300 mm spacings from the apex of the wall. Precise placement of the steel within the finished wall is an area that we can guarantee. A crucially important assurance to the long term strength of the structure as well as ensuring its ability to provide the desired levels of containment, this modification while simplistic has resulted in ease of compliance in this vital area. Concrete median or safety barriers are being used in Ireland with increasing frequency. They are superior to high maintenance metal guardrails or expanses of grassy median. Slipform median barriers prevent out-of-control vehicles from entering on coming traffic lanes and minimize the damage to vehicle and its passengers from the collision. The Safety Shape is the secret behind the success of the concrete barrier. This configuration is designed to lift the impacting vehicle wheels, reducing the overturning moment and returning the vehicle to the roadway surface. The use of Slipform barriers has increased worldwide and with the efficiency of the slipforming equipment the quality has improved significantly.

Kerb

Slipform Kerb may be complimented by a wide range of other in-situ concrete products but still remains one of the core areas for Cassidy Slipform Kerbing. As the chief product on which we built our reputation at the outset, its applications are extremely diverse which is reflected in our broad client base. In contrast with precast, slipform kerbs reflect a much greater level of durability while being much less labour intensive from the point of view of preparation and placement. Once a proper sub base has been laid, our team can handle the complete process in a fast and efficient manner. A number of different profiles are offered all of which are constructed to the most exacting standards.

Having successfully served the requirements of residential, commercial and infrastructural developments over our ten year involvement, we are capable of completing formations to the most stringent quality control and operational tolerance levels. This is ensured through our regular engagement in major infrastructural projects where the highest standards must be upheld. Vertical expansion joints are cut at pre-determined centres. The levels of accuracy attainable are proven by compliance with all relevant specs.

ADVANTAGES OF SLIPFORM KERBING COMPARED TO PRECAST KERBS

  • It is faster than conventional methods and less labour intensive.
  • It shows significant cost savings over conventional methods – the installation rate allows costs of 30-40% less than precast.
  • No precast to order and re-handle on the site several times.
  • Slipform kerbs are stronger – will not be damaged by heavy vehicles such as teleporters, dumpers, trucks etc.
  • A wide range of moulds available to suit particular requirements – the kerb shape and size can be manipulated for specific specifications.
  • No chasing down that last piece of radius, slipforming allows a radius as small as 24″.
  • Concrete is poured directly on subgrade, minimizing settlement from individual kerb placement.
  • On roadwork- traffic is diverted for a shorter time due to the speed of completing the project.
  • Slipform process is perfect for motorways, distributor roads, residential developments, commercial developments and private dwellings.

Cassidy Slipform Kerbing Ltd has specialised in producing slipform kerbs and safety barriers since 2015.
The Power Curber™ machine’s compact size and versatility allow us to achieve high levels of productivity. It gets in and out of tight spots quickly, making tight radius work on roundabouts and car parks much quicker. In addition to kerb and gutter work, the machine pours highway safety barrier, bridge parapet, footpaths, golf cart paths, agricultural foundations, irrigation ditches and stadium risers. Moulds can be custom made to suit each individual project, if required.

Water Surface Channels

In Ireland unfortunately it rains every two or three days and with our winters being the wettest on records, Through the recent and ongoing inclement weather conditions, we have noted the many benefits of Surface Water Channel. It has directly contributed to the excellent condition of roads where it has been installed. Surface water channel is another in-situ formation which provides a fast and effective means of removing surface water from our motorways. While occupying a larger footprint than the slot drain system, it provides much greater capacity and is offered in a number of different widths to suit diverse requirements. These include 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 0.3 and 0.75 metre widths. Through the width of the channel, a large level of capacity is offered. Our ability to construct such formations to the same levels of excellence as all in-situ concrete structures with the finish ensuring uninhibited water flow and elimination of sedimentation build up on the surface of the channel.
